Project Description:

In March 2016, Modern Building contracted with Mariani Nut Company to design and construct four bulk storage buildings in Winters, CA. The buildings, totaling 96,880 sq. ft., include two almond hull buildings and two in-shell walnut bulk storage buildings that contain over 3,500 cubic yards of concrete.  Superintendent Marc Ruz, along with many of our Modern crew members, have been working on the project for almost a year. The foundations for the almond hull buildings include 55 drilled footings, 13 to 18 feet deep, and 30 inches in diameter. Marc had to rescue a number of unsuspecting squirrels from the depths of these footings prior to pouring!

Modern crews formed, poured, and picked the concrete tilt-up walls for the in-shell walnut bulk storage buildings. The 21” thick wall panels are designed to withstand the weight of bulk storage loading, weighing up to 135,000 lbs each, and include insulation for refrigeration. Each walnut storage building can hold approximately 7,000 tons of walnuts. With the approximate value of in-shell walnuts at $1.00/lb, that’s roughly $28,000,000 in nuts between the two buildings!
